Enjoying five times as much!

Good morning to the World and Kanmon!

When I travel around Japan by my car, my biggest concern during trip is how to keep myself clean.

Several months ago, I wrote an article about Japanese advanced highway service areas which has hot spring facility and I have often used them. This time, I will talk about some tips for travel general roads in Japan.

Basically I go into the sea almost every during car trip and I rarely get dirty and I washed salts out by freshwater before I change clothes. So bathing/shower is not necessary work specially for me, but I always visit a certain type of places for relaxation and as a hobby.

Yes, they are Japanese SENTOs (authentic Japanese public bath). Sentos are very attractive places for the person like me who was born in SHOWA era (1926-1989).

In case of small Sento in local town, they don’t have risk of sharing bath with bunch of people like popular hot spring facility in suburbs. Because most of Japanese has in-house bath and Sentos have trouble of management and lack of their successors, many Sentos are closing down every year. Conversely, current existing Sentos have somehow attractive points which fascinate their users.

Three Sentos I visited in this trip have unique and comfortable atmosphere. “Old but clean and neat” is the important point which we should learn from them. Specially there was one Sento which break my record of oldest Sento and I could enjoy real time trip there. It seems that the Sento was established in TAISHO era (1912-1926). That surprised me a lot. (By the way, the station building in my town was also built in TAISHO, I remember now.)

So, I do recommend to visit Japanese traditional Sentos, specially because you may not to be able to use it next year and you never ever be able to experience them. Please try Japanese authentic relaxing experience NOW.

五倍楽しむ！

世界中に朝が、そして関門にもあさが来ました。
おはようございます。

車を使って数日間移動すると、一番気にしなくてはならないのが「いかに清潔を保つか！」。

以前、日本の高速道路ではサービスエリアが進化して、なかには入浴施設や温泉が併設されたものがあり、そうした施設をよく利用していることを記事にしたことがありますが、今回は下道移動時のヒントに焦点を当ててみます。

基本、移動中は年中ほぼ毎日海に入るため、汚れることは少なくて、潮も着替える前に水をかぶって落とします。というわけで自分にとって入浴は不要不急な行為ですが、疲れをとるため、というよりはむしろ「趣味」で訪れるスポットがあります。

そう、銭湯です。自分のような「昭和」な人間にはたまらない魅力の場所です。

これが地方の町の小さな銭湯だと、人気の日帰り温泉のようにメチャ混み・三密のリスクもありません。今、日本中で銭湯は家湯の普及・経営難・後継者不足からどんどんとその数を減らしています。それを逆に考えると、現存している銭湯はなにかしらの魅力があるところであることは間違いありません。

今回訪れた三つの銭湯はどこも個性的でとても気持ち良い空間でした。「古くても清潔」最も見習うべきポイントです。特に今回はマイレコードを更新する歴史的な銭湯もあって、本格的なタイムトリップも味わうことができました。なんと大正時代創業らしいです。驚きです。（そういえば、わが町の駅舎も大正でしたね。）

というわけで、もしかしたら来年はもうやっていないかもしれない、二度と（一度も）入ることができなくなるかもしれない貴重な「にっぽんの気持ち良い体験」をみなさんにオススメしたいと思います。
