What I pray to

Good morning to the World and Kanmon!

In Japan, we are in the middle of 3-day holiday. Most of Japanese ate 7 weeds(?) gruel on Sat. And we are finishing our New Year mode.

I didn’t go any famous Temple or Shine to pray during this SHOGATSU (= New Year Days). Instead of them, I went to my family graves to pray. I have been doing this for several years.

At the grave, what I pray to is, of course, my ancestors, but there are not bones of all ancestors but several, including my grandparents, whom I know well.

So which ancestor am I praying?

To be honest, I am praying to myself, reflecting vaguely on the tombstone. It doesn’t mean that I am a narcissist. There are all ancestors in myself, from ancient times to grandparents. How I am look like, my character, my gene and my live energy are all inherited from them.

Visiting family grave is the trigger for me to start thinking about ancestors in myself. It is like a ski stock to start turning on snow.
I pray with thanks to all ancestors for giving me great chance to live on this planet and vow to contribute to lives and happinesses of my child and descendants.
I got this style of praying finally after considering several years.

Even famous shrines and temples, to where hundreds and thousands of people come to pray, doesn’t have anything to pray actually except old traditions. People who is praying know it very much. But I understand the value of them, as cultural properties, study materials for cultural anthropology, dating spots of New Year. So I also visit them to study culture and local society or to spend leisure time, as many as I can during my traveling.

As a Japanese who don’t believe in any particular religion, I had been uncertain toward religion for long time, but now I have had my own religious idea since Indian yogi and yogini taught me “uniqueness of world religions”.

I am sorry about this long and abstract topic but I try to share my idea as a manager of guesthouse, who will welcome guest from everywhere in the world. Someone might think “what the hell is this guesthouse person thinking!”.

In conclusion, no matter about religion, I really appreciate that many lives get meet together and have fun time here TOUKA, after each long journey of life on each continent or island.

祈るべきもの

世界中に朝が、そして関門にもあさが来ました。
おはようございます。

現在、日本は三連休中で、土曜日に七草粥を食べ、お正月気分にお別れする週末を迎えています。

この正月は結局、有名な神社へ初詣にいけませんでした。というか、行きませんでした。
その代わり、自分は「お墓参り」に行きました（地元にいると便利です）。 帰省していた頃から、近年はずっとこのパターンです。

墓参りに行って「何に」祈るかといえば、当然「先祖」なのですが、そのお墓にはよく知っている祖父母から数代前ぐらいまでしか葬られていません。
（テノール歌手が唄ってヒットした歌ではありませんが、全ての先祖はそこにはいないのです。）

では、どの先祖に手を合わせるのか？

自分は墓石にうっすら映る自分自身に祈ることにしています。 そこには何万年も前の太古からの先祖全員が生きているからです。 身体的特徴・性格・遺伝子そして個体の持つ生命力は全て「先祖」から引き継がれたものです。

自分にとって「墓参り」はスキーのターンに使うストックの様な「きっかけ」。
お墓の前に立ち、自分の中で生き続けている全ての先祖へ、魂の営みへのお礼と、娘以降も続いていく命の幸せな連鎖に貢献していくことへ誓いを立てます。 ここ数年考えていて、ようやくこの考え方・祈り方が確立しました。

たとえ何百人も何万人もお参りする神社だとしても、実は祈るような対象は言い伝え以外何もありません。 お参りしている人も皆そのことを分かっているはずです。 ただ神社仏閣の文化財・文化人類学的研究の対象、正月デートの目的地としての価値は理解しています。 かくいう自分も文化交流、社会勉強やレジャーとして、できるだけ色々な宗教の寺社・偶像をお参りしています。
無神教の日本人として、宗教については迷いがあったのですが、数年前にインド人のヨギ・ヨギーニから「宗教の唯一性（どの宗教も基本的に起源は同じ）」を気付かせてもらったおかげで、ようやく自分なりの宗教観が持てました。

少し長くて抽象的な話題でしたが、これから様々な国からの旅行者を受け入れたい宿主の宗教観を披露してみました。 この宿、何を考えてこんな記事をアップしているのかと思われた方もいるかもしれませんね。

最後に宗教のことは棚に上げて、別々の大陸で太古から紡がれてきた命が、この宿で交歓していることを心からありがたいと感じています。

P.S. そのうち、一番重要な「何を」祈るかについても話題にしたいですね（笑）。祈願叶って大学・企業には入れたけれど、上手くいかずに失望・鬱・引きこもりになってしまう前に。
