The truth, lights are telling us

This week, NHK broadcasted one interesting documentary program.
It was about disclosing the secret side of Chinese economy from data and one brand-new and unique indicator was introduced in the program, which measures the difference between government reported GDP and actual one by calculating the strength of lights from nighttime satellite pictures.

By the way, I utilized essence of this indicator to watch the strait in front of this guesthouse and found out one interesting fact.
*The first picture is that of Chinese luxury big cruiser ship.
We have often seen the ship recently and thought simply that many private Chinese tourists were coming to Japan. But…
*If we compare first picture and second picture of ASUKA II, taken last Sunday, and we see obvious difference.
Yes, difference in the strength of lights around cabin’s level. The lights are mainly passenger’s cabins’ lights.
When I look back and think about it, we don’t have guests from China as many as that before pandemic even in this little guesthouse, though we are hearing news that Chinese private tourists are still coming.

P.S. With preparing these photos, I was lost in a certain thought. Because I got a message today that my friend from high school passed away. He was an officer of local government who had made effort to attract luxury cruise ships to call at this town. So I may remember him, every time I will see such luxury ship passing the strait.

灯りが語る真実
世界中に朝が、そして関門にもあさが来ました。 おはようございます。
今週、NHKでとても興味深い番組が放送されました。
中国経済の裏の姿をデータから暴くという内容の番組でしたが、その中で特に面白いのが衛星画像に映る街の夜間照明の強さでGDPの発表と実態との差を図るという新たな指標です。

ちなみにこの指標を用いて、目の前の海峡を眺めてみると面白いことに気付きました。
・最初の画像は最近よく見かけるようになった中国の豪華客船です。
これまでは頻繁に海峡を通過するようになって、中国も個人客の旅行欲はすごいなぁと単純に思っていましたが、
・これを次の画像、先の日曜日に撮影したASUKA IIのものと比べるとその違いは歴然です。
そう、客室まわりの灯りの強さです。その灯り、主に客室の明かりから構成されています。
振り返って考えると、個人旅行客は日本に来ているとはいえ、当宿だけ見ても以前とは格段に少ないのが現状です。
それでは、来るべきショックにこれから備えることで素敵な一日を！
P.S. 客船の画像を選択・アップロードしながらある想いに耽っていました。こうした大型の豪華客船がこの町に寄港するように誘致していた高校時代の友人が、つい最近他界したという連絡をもらったからです。この宿を開業する時にも駆けつけてくれたかつてのバンド仲間。これからも豪華客船が通過するたびに彼のこと思い出すのかもしれません。
