Good morning to the World and Kanmon!

Monday, on my way back to the guesthouse, I noticed that there were unusually few oncoming cars…

Then I saw a bright light up the road.

What were there were cute panda-colored automobiles and a large number of cosplayers in uniforms holding red penlights, or rather, guide lights!

I felt that it was unusual to have checkpoints starting on Monday, and then I thought…

that’s right, I remembered that it was reported on the news the other day that it’s been just 15 years since high school students were killed in an accident caused by drunk driving.

Fukuoka Prefecture has seen a number of tragic drunk driving accidents, yet the number of arrests for drunk driving remains high.

Why do they drink? Why do they drive?

(By the way, our guests from our neighboring country, regardless of age or gender, drink a lot, so we have an enormous amount of empty cans in our trash. So I’m sure the neighbors think I am heavy drinkers…)

I sincerely hope that Fukuoka will become a place of zero drunk driving.

世界中に朝が、そして関門にもあさが来ました。 おはようございます。

月曜日、宿への帰り道、やけに対向車が少ないなと思ったら、、、

道の前方にまぶしい明かりが見えてきました。

そこにあったのは、かわいいパンダカラーの車と赤いペンライト、いや誘導灯を手にした大勢の制服コスプレーヤー達！

月曜から検問なんて珍しいなぁと思って考えると、、、

そうだ、飲酒運転が原因の高校生死亡事故からちょうど１５年、先日ニュースで報道されたことを思い出しました。

福岡県、悲惨な飲酒運転事故が何度も起きているのに、飲酒運転の検挙数は高止まり。

なんで飲むかなぁ？なんで乗るかなぁ？

普段、ほとんどお酒を飲まない宿主にはその気持ちがよく分かりません。

（ちなみにお隣の国からのゲストさんは老若男女関わらず、尋常なく飲むためにウチは空き缶ゴミが超絶多くて近所の人には飲んべえだと思われてるに違いありませんが、、、）

飲酒運転のない福岡になるよう祈ってやみません。

それでは、飲んだら乗らない、乗るなら飲まない素敵な一日を！

成果確認 / Confirming the result

Confirming the result

Good morning to the World and Kanmon!

As a host, it’s his policy to make the most of every opportunity…

He would never miss a golden opportunity like having local firefighters come and inspect this property.

I told him that I had previously seen a fire drill taking place on the steep slope in front of the guesthouse,

and he taught me what the results of that drill were.

Why did I ask that?

I couldn’t help but worry about whether proper firefighting would be possible in the event of an emergency because of this steep slope.

The firefighters told us that although they had to maneuver, they were able to confirm that a small fire engine could easily climb to the top of the hill and that this would not hinder firefighting efforts.

Of course, the most important thing is to avoid fires, but I was grateful to know that they would be able to respond appropriately in the unlikely event of an emergency.

After all, even though the distance from the fire station to here in a straight line is only 500m, I was very worried that this steep slope might have a negative impact in the event of an emergency, so I’m really glad that I was able to confirm this.

成果確認

世界中に朝が、そして関門にもあさが来ました。 おはようございます。

どんな機会も有効に活用するのがポリシーの宿主は、、、

地域の消防士が当宿にいらっしゃって立入検査をするなんていうせっかくのチャンスを見逃すなんて絶対にしません。

以前、宿の前の急坂で消防訓練していたのを見たことをお伝えし、

その時の訓練の結果がどうだったのか教えていただきました。

なぜか？

万が一の時に、この急坂のせいでまともな消防活動が出来るのか気になって仕方なかったから。

で、教えてもらったのは、切り返しは必要だったけれど、小型のポンプ車なら坂のてっぺんまで問題なく登れて消化活動に支障がないことが確認できたということ。

もちろん火事を起こさないことが一番重要だけれども、万が一の時にはちゃんと対応してもらえそうなことが確認出来て、ありがたかったです。

なんてったって、消防署からここまで直線距離では500mなのにもかかわらず、この急坂がもしもの時に悪影響しないかがとても心配だったので、本当に本件確認ができてよかったです。

対岸の手本 / Learning from the other side

Learning from the other side

Good morning to the World and Kanmon!

After crossing the strait, I looked around to see if there were any ideas I could use or anything I could emulate, but…

I was unable to find much that could serve as a reference for a lodging guesthouse.

However there was one thing that really impressed me.

And that was the city newsletter!

It was great to learn more about the newly opened accommodation facility in more detail than I had expected through the city newsletter, in addition to this,

I was especially impressed by how well-made the newsletter itself was, and how much easier it was to read and use than the newsletters on this side of the strait, which are based on an old-fashioned style with added color and only cost more to produce.

The best thing about it is its size!

The perfect A4 size makes it easy to carry around and flip through the pages. 

The font and spacing between letters are just right, making it easy to read even for seniors.

In contrast, this one is an odd size, neither A4 nor B5, and it’s folded so it’s hard to turn the pages!

Now a days, even school handouts these days are A4…

The font size and the way it is packed into the text make me think that this must be a municipality with a very small elderly population.

How wealthy must this local government be to force color into pages that don’t even need it?

On the first floor of Kitakyushu City Hall, there is a place where publications from municipalities across the river are displayed, but they are only event-related!

I truly feel that it is the city newsletter that should be shared between government offices and that they should steal the good parts from each other.

Don’t tell me… are you pretending not to see it?!

How about step your perspective to the other side of the strait and saying, “Step outside the box*”? (*This year’s keyword, familiar to those who know it.)

対岸の手本

世界中に朝が、そして関門にもあさが来ました。 おはようございます。

海峡を渡った先で、使えるアイデア、真似すべき工夫などないか色々見て回ったのですが、、、

宿として、参考になるものはほとんど見つけることが出来ませんでした。

でも、ひとつだけとても感心したものがありました。

それは市報！

新たにオープンした施設のことを、その市報を通して期待していた以上に詳しく知れたことも良かったのですが、

とにかく市報そのものの作りが素晴らしくて、旧態依然の様式にカラーを付けて制作コストだけアップさせた海峡こちら側の市報より抜群に読みやすく、扱いやすいことに感激しました。

なによりも良いのはそのサイズ！

ピッタリA４サイズなのが、持ち運びや誌面をめくるのにちょうどいい。

フォントや文字間スペースも適切で高齢者でも読みやすい。

対して、こちら側のはA４でもB５でもない中途半端なサイズで、さらに折り曲げているからめくりにくい！

イマドキ学校のプリントですらA４なのに、、、ね。

きっと高齢者が超少ない自治体なんだろうなぁ、と思わせる文字サイズに詰め込み具合。

内容も、その必要もないページに無理やりカラーを差し込んだりして、どんだけ裕福な自治体なんでしょう？

北九州市役所の１階には対岸の自治体の刊行物を差し立てている場所があるも、イベント関係のものだけ！

思うに「市報」こそお互い役所間で共有しあって、良いとこを盗みあってもらいたいもんだ、と心から感じました。

まさか、、、見て見ぬふりしてたりするぅ？！

視点を海峡の向こうに「一歩、はみだす*」っていうはどうでしょう？ （*分かる人には分かる今年のキーワード）

それでは、良い仕組みはどんどん取り込んで素敵な一日を！
