Fading Japanese traditions – Beautiful flame

Good morning to the World and Kanmon!

As we continue to run a business that welcomes guests from overseas, we have felt not a few disappointing experiences.

Although traditional Japanese daily culture is finally beginning to receive international recognition, there are many aspects that Japan itself has forgotten, abandoned, and allowed to decline, and as a result, are on the verge of becoming “extinct.”

One typical example threatened with extinction is the “SENTO = public bathhouse from long ago” that the host has repeatedly mentioned, but there are other similar culture and seasonal events.

It’s been almost two weeks since the new year began, but what are you Japanese people doing/planning to do with the decorations you put up for New Year’s?

Originally, this is the traditional way in Japan to dispose of decorations for New Year (as shown in the image), but I’m sure there are not many places specially in big cities that still follow the tradition in this way anymore. (Maybe throwing wishes for family’s safety/health and the year in the trash?)

Thankfully, this tradition still lives on in this town.

However, just like public baths, this is a Japanese tradition that cannot be continued or sustained only by the efforts of the facility owner; connections within the community (or perhaps the term “KIZUNA” that was quite popular a while ago) are essential.

We want not only the companies, corporations, and local governments we work for to be sustainable, but also our important local culture and traditions.

Am I the only one who feels sad about the reality that only “commercially viable” things like OSECHI and EHOUMAKI survive as traditions?

Over the past few days, I have been sharing my discoveries and realizations about the other side of the strait in a series, but I have decided to insert this topic here because it is very important.

忘れられてしまいそうな日本文化 〜 美しい炎

世界中に朝が、そして関門にもあさが来ました。 おはようございます。

海外からのゲストさんをおもてなしする事業を続けてきて、とても残念なことが少なからずあります。

それは、今ようやく国際的にも評価され始めている伝統的な日本文化にもかかわらず、日本自身が忘れ・手放し・衰退させ、その結果「絶滅」しそうなものが少なくないことです。

代表的な一例は、宿主が何度も唱えている「むかしからの銭湯」ですが、他にも同様の文化・季節の行事があります。

新しい年が明けて、まもなく二週間が過ぎようとしていますが、日本人の皆さんは正月に飾ったお飾りをどうされて／どうする予定でいらっしゃいますか？

本来、正月飾りはこのよう（画像のよう）に対処することがにっぽんの伝統ですが、きっともう大都会ではこんな風に伝統を守っているところは少ないのではないでしょうか？（家内安全や一年の願をゴミ箱にポイ？）

ありがたいことに、この町ではまだこうした伝統が生き続けています。

ただ、これもまた、銭湯と同様に施設の持ち主が頑張るだけでは継続・持続が不可能なにっぽんの伝統で、地域内でのつながり（ちょっと前に流行った「絆」とも言うのかも）が不可欠です。

勤めている会社・企業・自治体だけでなく、私たちの大切な「地域の文化・伝統」もサスティナブルでありたいですね。

おせちや恵方巻きのような「商業ベースにのるもの」だけが伝統として生き残る現実に寂しさを感じるのは自分だけでしょうか？

ここ数日、対岸についての発見や気付きをシリーズでお届けしている最中ではありますが、大事なことなので強引に挿入させていただきました。
