I knew that day would come someday but…
Good morning to the World and Kanmon!
The young guest came to this town to celebrate an important day with his loved person,
holding a fancy packaged traditional sweets as a souvenirs for us.
We had time to talk with the guests who had gone to the Christmas market in the city and returned after enjoying the Christmas mood very much.
The conversation turned to work, and since the guest’s work environment was close to the town where I was traveling for business, our conversation became more lively exciting than usual.
When I asked him about his workplace, he said that he works for a local subsidiary of a Japanese company.
When I dared to ask the company name…
He replied with the company name which I had been very very familiar with. Yes, I found out that the company was a local subsidiary of the company I had worked for when I was an company businessman, and that I had visited the subsidiary many times on business.
I heard that he started working there six months ago and has been studying Japanese since then, and his Japanese is unbelievably good already.
A long time ago, when I was on a business trip to that base, I was surprised and wondering, “Why do the local staff at this company speak Japanese so well?” I remembered the memories.
It seems that the local subsidiary has its own Japanese language education program and Japanese language acquisition tradition unique to that company and its staffs. (This never happened in other countries, including our headquarters in Japan…)
There is an international airport in the town where the guest lives and works, so I’m sure the two of them will visit this strait town again when they get exhausted of work.

世界中に朝が、そして関門にもあさが来ました。 おはようございます。
その若いゲストさんは、大切な人と、大切な日をお祝いするためにこの町にやってきました。
素敵なパッケージの伝統菓子をお土産にと手に持って、、、
街のクリスマスマーケットに出かけて行って、クリスマスムードを満喫されて戻ってきたゲストさんとお話をする時間がありました。
お仕事の話題になって、ゲストさんの職場環境が自分の知っている出張先の町に近かったこともあり、いつになく会話は盛り上がりました。
で、職場を聞くと、どうも日本企業の現地法人にお勤めとのこと。
あえて会社名を聞くと、、、
なんと自分がサラリーマン時代に勤めていた会社の現地法人で何度も出張訪問していた会社だということがわかりました。
聞けば仕事を始めたのは６ヶ月前、そこから日本語も勉強したということですが、信じられないぐらい日本語がお上手。
その昔、出張時にも「なんでこの会社の現地スタッフはこんなにも日本語がうまいんだ！」と驚いたことを思い出しました。
どうもその職場ならではの日本語教育プログラムと日本語習得のその現地法人独自の伝統があるようです。（他の国ではそんなことは一切ありませんでした。日本の本社を含めて、、、）
ゲストさんの住む町・働く町には国際空港があるので、きっとまた仕事に疲れたら、この海峡の町を二人で訪ねてくれることでしょう。
