The lucky guests!
Good morning to the World and Kanmon!
We had guests staying with us on August 13th, the start of the OBON holidays.
Shortly after midday, they headed over to the other side of the strait;
I heard that after renting and being fitted for YUKATA there,
they returned to the port town on this side to watch the fireworks.
Before actually seeing the show, they had been intimidated by stories – from both myself and the owner of the port town’s only YAKINIKU restaurant – about how incredibly crowded it gets on the day of the fireworks…
Sure enough, after the firework show, they got caught in the surging crowds and didn’t make it back here until 22:52!
The fireworks were supposed to end at 20:50, so it seems it took them two hours to make the return trip – a distance of just one station.
Even though I had suggested walking back – a route that takes only an hour – it seems they truly experienced the reality of a Japanese summer firsthand.
They were so exhausted they couldn’t even tell whether to push or pull this guesthouse’s entrance door, but they had clearly enjoyed the fireworks to the absolute fullest.
However…
As it turns out, this guest was incredibly lucky.
They didn’t realize it, but it seems there was heavy rain in the neighboring town right up until the fireworks started.
If that rain had shifted over to this strait, things could have turned into a disaster. (After all, there was that incident in Chiba…)
And above all…
The fireworks this year were absolutely beautiful.
Last year, it was hard to tell whether we were watching the fireworks or just the smoke, but this year, a gentle breeze of about 2 m/s made for perfect viewing conditions.
They were likely too exhausted to realize it, but they were incredibly lucky with the weather at the start of the OBON holidays.

幸運なゲストさんっ！
世界中に朝が、そして関門にもあさが来ました。 おはようございます。
盆の入り8月13日に滞在されていたゲストさん。
お昼過ぎに対岸まで出かけて行って、
聞いた話では、浴衣のレンタルと着付けを終えて、
こちら側の港町に戻って花火を見物されたとのこと。
実際に見物するまでの間、自分や港町にある一卓しかない焼肉屋の親父から、花火の日の人の混み様の話にビビっていたのですが、、、
案の定、花火後には人波に揉まれて、ここへ戻ってきたのは22:52！
花火の終了は20:50だったはずなので、ひと駅しかない区間を２時間かけて戻ってきたようです。
１時間あれば戻ってこれる、歩いて帰ってくる方法も勧めたのに、身をもって日本の夏を体感したようです。
宿の玄関のドアが押すのか引くのかもわからないぐらいに疲弊していて、120%花火を満喫されていました。
でも、、、
実はこのゲストさん、とってもラッキーだったんです。
本人たちは知らないのですが、花火開始直前まで隣町では大雨だったようです。
もし、その雨が海峡までシフトしていたら大変なことになっていたかもしれません。（千葉での話もあるし）
そしてなにより、、、
今年の花火はとっても綺麗でした。
昨年は花火を見ていたのか、煙を見ていたのかわからないぐらいだったのが、今年は風速2mぐらいの風が適度に吹いていて花火観覧には最適でした。
本人たちは疲れ切っていて気付かないのでしょうが、かなりラッキーな盆の入りでした。
