What we learned this time – study in terrible situation
Good morning to the World and Kanmon!
In the mid-winter, after we stayed at value Onsen accommodation,
we obtain much more learning and noticing than we had expected.
So let us introduce one of them, which is the biggest one for us.
According to their reception staff, the room occupancy rate of the day was around 90%. And we surprised how busy they were on weekday!
The reason of it was, Yes, inbound travelers!
We thought very noisy in middle court and saw more than 10 children frolicked there.
There was parking lot behind the middle court with full of cars with WA* started license plates.
(*WA means rent-a-car in Japan.)
They spoke Chinese, but I know Chinese (international) driver license is not valid in Japan. So I can know that they came from one of other Chinese speaking Asian countries which has never snow.
That time, we thought they understand how to travel Japan and Japanese culture. But unfortunately they were NOT.
At detached open-air Onsen, hot spring,
At the lodge, guests can knows that the onsen is occupied or not by seeing shoes outside the door. As we could not fine shoes there, we assumed that Onsen room was vacant. But the door was locked.
“Where are their shoes?” As we are a little curious, we waited for them to come out from the Onsen room. About 15min later, they came out with shoes on their feet.
I kindly instructed them “No shoes, in the room, please!” And they responded “Thank you!” with no offense.
We opened the door in a half-give up mood and found that the room was muddy all over the TATAMI mats.
We thought that lodge staffs should know this situation and I walked to the reception.
One of their staff came and cleaned room.
In our guesthouse TOUKA, we have overlooked some rough behavior of our guests, as we have thought they are our precious guests.
This experience made us understand that one guest’s bad behavior can create other guests’ discomforts.
And we also recognized that teaching guests from foreign countries Japanese custom and culture politely is our duty as lodging staffs.
Guests’ quality is also our guesthouse’s quality, we realized.
Fortunately, all of our guests have been very qualified because of our filter set with our hosting experience. We have had no low quality guests. But now, we strongly feels that we should consider the counter measures in advance to the increase of inbound guests.

今回の学び 〜 ひどい状態からの気付き
世界中に朝が、そして関門にもあさが来ました。 おはようございます。
真冬の九州、破格の温泉宿を利用したおかげで、
想定以上のたくさんの学びや気付きを得ることができました。
せっかくの機会なので、たくさんある中の最大の気付きをご紹介します。
フロントスタッフによると滞在中の客室稼働は９０％以上だったようで、平日なのに凄いなぁと思っていたら、、、
そのカラクリは、、、そう、インバウンドっ！
雪の積もった中庭がやけに騒がしいと思ったら、雪に大はしゃぎの子供たち。
その向こうにある駐車場は「わナンバー」で満車状態。
話し声は中国語だけれど、中国の国際免許では日本の車を運転できないので、きっとけっして雪が降ることのない中国語圏からの個人旅行グループがレンタカー数台を利用して旅行しているんだろうことが推測できました。
レンタカーを運転するほど日本に慣れてるんだと思っていたら、、、とぉんでもない。
離れにある露天風呂にて、
使用中であれば、脱衣所のドアの前にあるはずの靴がないので、お風呂が空いてる＝ラッキーと思ったらドアには鍵が、、、
え、靴は？と興味本位もあって、ドアが開くのを待っていると、しばらくして中から靴を履いたままの利用客が出てきました。
「No shoes, in the room, please!」と教えてあげるも、「Thank you!」と悪気すらない反応。
あらためてドアを開けてみると、、、、
そこは脱衣スペースの畳の上が泥だらけの状態。
施設のスタッフにもこの状況を理解してもらわないと、と呼んできて清掃対応いただきました。
「灯火」ではちょっとしたお客の粗相についてもお客さまだからと、大目に見て対応してきましたが、
あるお客さまの粗相が、他のお客の不快感に直結することに気付かせてもらいました。
そして、文化の違う国からきたゲストには、日本の文化・生活習慣を理解してもらうのも宿の責任だと、
お客のクオリティも宿のクオリティなんだということを体感しました。
幸い「灯火」ではこれまでのノウハウから施したフィルターが効いているために、過去に低品格のゲストさんの利用はありませんが、インバウンドの回復に先回りして対策を再構築しないといけないなぁと実感します。
