Love Island closest to the Heaven?
Good morning to the World and Kanmon!
Since I have landed “the island”, I wrote article with what I saw there.
Up to previous article, I wrote only GOOD aspect, but I should write my HONEST OPINION about the island. Because I can imagine many more people will visit there on fine day like today.
Tuesday after exploring the island, I went back to harbor pretty early and spend time in the small shop near by. The story I heard there changed my impression about the island completely.
“AINOSHIMA” was promoted as “Island where more cats live than people” several years ago.
That promotion brought tremendous tourists from overseas to the small island.
I already knew the story, but I didn’t know after that.
Honestly, I felt something wrong in first 10 minutes after landing on Ainoshima.
Because number of cats is not as what I saw in internet.
(It is sure that cats living around TOUKA are more than Ainoshima.)
What I felt wrong is not only about the number, but also about kitty cat. Because I cannot find kitty there.
That is because of sterilization/castration to whole cats on the island. Story of sterilization/castration can be searched in internet by keyword “Ainoshima, Cat”, it comes after the promotion story by cats.
“AINOSHIMA (can be heard as Island of Love)” is now “Island of NO LOVE”
What I saw on Tuesday (Sep. 6, 2016) was the process after big sterilization/castration treatment.
Because cats don’t show they are dying, number of cat reduced drastically, without being aware of it. Cats are very few all area in the island.
According to the shop owner, most of all tourists disappointed recently with the reduced number of cats and left the island in frustration.
I, an outsider of this topic, have no comment of good or bad about sterilization/castration. I really don’t know which.
After promotion without considering expectation of local people, tourists increased very much. That made troubles among tourists, cats and local people and cats got suffered happy sterilization/castration.
Now the island is going to the next stage.
It is in the middle of hopes and disappointments.
But internet articles, titled “Cat Paradise”, still invite cat enthusiasts to the island.
I think now is the time someone broadcast officially that the island is no longer “PARADISE” but “HEAVEN”.
Latest guide book of Kitakyushu, supervised by the city, doesn’t have any information about Ainoshima.
Latest City’s Newsletter has special article about the Ainoshima but doesn’t talk about cat very much. I see something intentional in these publishing.
Anyway, remaining cats are still touting tourists at island harbor today. And latest economy news reminds me the time when bunch of cats touted tourists.
In the human world, people spend hard time for infertility treatment, but on the other hand, cats get sterilization/castration treatment. Both stories might be showing pathetic future of us.
As a person who concern tourism around Kanmon, I cannot take my eyes off what will happen in AINOSHIMA.
Won’t you watch the future of both “Love Island” and “Beautiful Country” together in TOUKA?

天国に一番近い愛の島？
世界中に朝が、そして関門にもあさが来ました。 おはようございます。
火曜日に「その島」に渡ってから、島で見てきたことを記事にしてきました。
ここまでは単に良いことしか書きませんでしたが、このままだと（天気のよい今日あたりなどは）期待して島に渡る人も少なくないだろうと思われるので、一つ正直な感想を残しておきます。
島探検を終え、早めに船着場に戻り、余った時間を近くの商店で過ごしました。その時に聞いた話で島の印象が180度変わりました。
「あいのしま」は数年前、島おこしの一環で「人口より猫の多い島」として「売り出し」されたようです。
それが功を奏して「猫の島」として外国人観光客を呼び寄せました。
ここまでは自分も知っていたのですが、実際に島に渡ってみるとどうも様子が違う。
いるにはいるけれど、猫はそんなにいる感じでもない。
（むしろ「灯火」の近所の方が多いぐらい）
違和感は数だけではありません。
「あいのしま」の猫たちには「愛」の結晶、つまり子猫がいない。
これは不妊・去勢治療された後、島に戻すという処置が行われたため。
その成り行きはネットで「藍島・猫」で検索すれば、
「猫による島おこし」の次にヒットするので分かります。
島の名前に反して「あいすることのできないしま」になっている様です。
今回島で見たのはそんな過程をへて、ずいぶん変わってしまった様子でした。
猫は死ぬ姿を見せないため、気付くといつのまにか数が減っていて、
島のどの地区でもいまは数えるほどらしいです。
その減り様たるや、激減という感じだそうです。
猫天国という噂を聞きつけ猫目当てに訪れた国内外の観光客も
現状にガッカリしてすぐ帰るという、変な循環に陥っているようでした。
部外者の自分は島で起こっていることに賛否を述べる資格もないし、
その良否ははっきりいってよく分かりません。
島民の期待不在のまま、島おこし(?)で外国人観光客で大いに盛り上がり、
観光客・猫・島民の間で問題を起こし、不妊処置を実施。
今、また新たな局面を迎えつつあるようです。
島おこし〜次々に起こる問題に一喜一憂している島！
そして、それに巻き込まれた島民、そして猫たち。
ただ未だネット上には「猫天国」の記事だけが残り、
「猫好きの集客」が継続されています。
そろそろ、その「天国」が 、、、
“PARADISE” ではなく “HEAVEN” だということを、
きちんと広報する必要がありそうです。
市が監修に関わった最新のガイドには「あいのしま」は記載すらされていないし、
表紙に島への渡船を特集した最新の市政だよりにも、猫のことはサラッとしか書いておらず、作為的な感すらあります。
さて、今日も島の渡船乗り場では、残った猫たちが上陸してくる観光客に異様なまでのスリ寄り接客を展開しています。 自分には数年前の大勢の猫による接客画像が、最近の人間界ともダブって見えます。
必死で「不妊治療」をする日本人と、意思とは反して「不妊手術」されてしまう藍島猫との対比と併せて、こころなしか哀しい未来を示唆しているような気もします。
少なからず「関門」の観光に携わる人間として、この島の行方から目が離せません。
未来を照らす「灯火」で、一緒に「愛の島」と「美しい国」の行方を見ませんか？
