The Christmas market in our home city, Kitakyushu, started last year.
This is the second time the host visited Kokura to see the market, but it seems somehow different to him from last year.
Of course, there are some big changes, such as the layout, but it doesn’t seem like that’s the case.
In fact, the change was in the host.
What kind of changes?
It’s the difference between before visiting Nagasaki and after visiting Nagasaki.
It sounds simple, but the difference is actually very big.
I began to feel strongly that it was not right to make such a fuss about Christmas and Santa Claus when we didn’t even have a Bible or could sing hymns.
It’s strange that the Christmas market here starts earlier and longer than the White House’s Christmas.

What do you think about pagans celebrating religious events earlier than the original believers?

What would the hidden Christians think if they were alive today about the Japanese people’s enthusiasm for Christmas?
I remember a long time ago, a Japanese-Hawaiian woman sitting next to me on a bench at Ala Moana told me, “When our parents’ generation immigrated, they struggled to even find food, but they worked hard and overcame those hardships. But now, Japanese people come here casually and spend a lot of money. It’s a wonderful thing, but I have mixed feelings about it.”
These days, I am reminding myself that it is important to understand the history and meaning of faith and land, as well as the essence of things, which tend to be hidden behind commercial dramatization.

昔、アラモアナで聞いた話に、、、
世界中に朝が、そして関門にもあさが来ました。 おはようございます。
昨年から始まったおいらの街、北九州のクリスマス・マーケット。
宿主が小倉まで観に行くのも二度目になりますが、昨年とはどこか違うように思えて仕方ありません。
もちろんレイアウト等、大きく変わった点もありますが、どうもそんなことではなさそうです。
実は変化は宿主の方にありました。
どんな変化？
それは、ビフォー長崎か、アフター長崎かの違い。
単純に聞こえますが、実はその違いはとても大きかったりします。
聖書も持ってないのに、賛美歌も歌えないのに、クリスマスだ、サンタクロースだって、騒いでて良いんだろうかという思いがとても強くなりました。
クリスマス・マーケットもホワイトハウスのクリスマスより早く始まっていることに違和感を感じずにはいられません。

異教徒が本来の信者よりも早く長く宗教行事を祝うってどうなんでしょう？
イスラエルからミサイルが飛んでこないか不安になります。
そして、潜伏キリシタンが命をかけて守ろうとした唯一無二の信仰、、、
ホットワインとホットチョコレートで上書きしてしまっていいのかな、と率直に感じます。
この現象、敬虔なクリスチャンのインバウンド観光客はどう感じているんでしょう？
日本人のクリスマス熱狂ぶり、潜伏キリシタンの人たちがもし今生きていたらどう思うでしょう？
昔、アラモアナのドンキ広場のベンチで隣に座っていた日系ハワイアンのおばあさんが「親の世代が移住してきた時は食べるにも困っていた時代、努力してそんな苦労を乗り越えてきたのだけど、今の日本人は気楽にやってきてたくさんお金を落としていく。とても良いことだけれど、なんか複雑な思いがするよ」と話してくれたことを思い出します。
信仰や土地の歴史や意味を理解した上で、商業的な脚色の影に隠れがちな、物事の本質だけは分かっていないといけないなぁとあらためて自戒している今日この頃です。
