Limited to Kyushu!

Good morning to the World and Kanmon!

In Japan, this week is the week of entrance ceremonies and the start of the school year.

Unlike other major countries, Japan’s fiscal year starts in April.

We imagine that the lucky new students were able to start their new lives amidst the falling Sakura blossoms. Congratulations!

Speaking of school events, I recently watched an interesting TV program.

The program discussed a certain practice that was not only in Fukuoka Prefecture, where the Kanmon area is located, but also throughout Kyushu, or what is known as Greater Kyushu area.

It’s a custom where alumni communities are formed on a large scale based on the school (especially high schools) rather than by graduation year, and apparently this seems unusual to people from other regions.

Many of the cast members on the show were surprised.

However, if this practice surprises people, what do they think of the cases where schools continue to hold similar large-scale alumni reunions even after the school itself has closed down?

Actually, ever since returning to my hometown, I’ve personally felt a sense of unease about the situation at my alma mater. But now that I know that this isn’t because I lived in Tokyo for a long time or even abroad, but rather because it’s generally seen as unusual, I’m honestly a little relieved.

During the program, there was a shot of a table where the youngest/fresh graduates of a certain high school were sitting at a reunion, and I was very envious.

Because, in the case of my alma mater, there will never be any new graduates joining the association.

At the same time, I also have some questions.

My question is why, even when graduates run for mayor of a local government or in national elections, we don’t hear any talk of a unified support for them.

Given these circumstances, it would be interesting to consider whether, when their alma mater faced the threat of closure, the association united to take preventative measures against such signs or to implement countermeasures in solidarity.

九州限定！

世界中に朝が、そして関門にもあさが来ました。 おはようございます。

日本では、今週は入学式・始業式ウィークにあたります。

他の主要各国とは異なり、日本は４月が会計年度のスタートだからです。

幸運な新入生は桜舞う中、新生活を始めることができたのではないかと思います。おめでとうございます。

学校行事といえば、先日興味深いテレビ番組を見ました。

当地、関門エリアが属する福岡県だけでなく、九州一円いわゆる大九州でのある慣行が取り上げられていました。

それは、学校ごとの卒業生のコミュニティが卒業年度ごとではなく、学校（特に高校）単位で大規模に構成されているというしきたりで、他地域の人からみるとそれが異常に映るそうなんです。

番組の中でも、出演者の多くが驚いていました。

ただ、この慣例について驚かれてしまうと、学校自体が閉校してしまっているのにもかかわらず、同様の大規模な卒業生会が引き続き開催されている学校のケースはどう思われてしまうのでしょう？

実はUターンして以来、個人的にはそうした母校の状況に違和感を感じてはいましたが、それが東京生活が長かったり、海外生活までしていたせいではなく、一般的に異色に見られることが分かって、正直少し安心したところがあります。

番組の中、ある高校の卒業生の会で、その年に卒業したばかりの最若手メンバーが座っているテーブルが映っていたのが、とても羨ましく思われました。

なぜなら母校の場合、甲子園にも、花園にも、国立競技場へ応援しに行く可能性が未来永劫にないからです。

同時に疑問もあります。

卒業生の中から自治体の首長選挙や国政選挙に出馬する卒業生が出ても、一致団結して応援するという話が聞こえてこないことです。

そうした状況から、母校が閉校する危機が生じた時に、会で団結してそうした兆候に予防策を講じたり、一致団結して対抗策がとられたのかどうかも興味深いところです。
