Japanese Title (邦題)： 「暑い熱い闘い！」末尾に
Good morning to the World and Kanmon!
It is very hot this year in Japan. But it is very hot in not only climate, but also business world in Japan.
As of today, one famous Japanese company is under Heated Battle!
The company is “IDEMITSU KOSAN” established by the Man called Pirate.
Origin of “IDEMITSU KOSAN” was “IDEMITSU SHOKAI” and “IDEMITSU SHOKAI” was founded in Moji (where TOUKA locates) 1911, 105 years ago, by Mr. Idemitsu Salou, who was called as the Man called Pirate.
The battle is between the founder’s family and current company management, arguing about M&A with Showa Shell Oil Company. If you want to know about the battle more in detail, you can find various information from newspaper, economic magazine, internet and so on. So I skip the explanation.
What I am interested in is how IDEMITSU will handle this issue with/without M&A with Showa Shell. Because IDEMITSU is the company which represent “Japanese Style Management”, enjoyed reputation from all over the world about twenty years ago, but no longer.
IDEMITSU is the company with strong management policy which never laid off its employee, even in the chaotic times after World War II.
Time around first-run of the movie “the Man called Pirate” can be the peak of the battle and we have to keep an eye on the direction of this battle.
I am planning to follow this battle closely, how it come to an end. No matter happy or tragic end, it is sure that to show certain direction to Japanese business man/woman how to react in each business life.
Anyway, IDEMITSU will come under the spotlights of both public entertainment and global economy. Don’t you come and see/feel where the “IDEMITSU” started its business.

「暑い熱い闘い！」
今週の日本はめちゃくちゃ暑いです。 けれども気候より もっと熱い場所が日本にはあるようです。
今、ある会社が熱い闘いの中で渦巻いています。
その会社とは「海賊と呼ばれた男」が起こした会社、出光興産です。
出光興産はその起源を「出光商会」に持ち、「出光商会」は105年前の1911年に「灯火」のあるこの門司で「海賊と呼ばれた男」出光佐三が創業した会社です。
今回の闘いでは、その出光創業家と現在の経営陣の間で火花が飛び交っています。 国内の石油元売りの再編の中で昭和シェル石油との合併に際して熱く揉めているようです。その対立の様相は新聞各紙・経済誌・ネット検索で調べていただけば、あらゆる情報にヒットするのでここでは割愛します。
自分が注目するのは、20年程前には世間でもてはやされた「日本的経営」の極みでもあり、人を育て大切にする「出光」が、効率化を最大限に重視する外資系企業である「昭和シェル」とどのように経営統合するのか、もしくは統合を断念するのか、どんな舵取りをしていくかです。
出光といえば、戦後の混乱期の中でも「人を切らない」方針を貫き、生き残り、復興した強靭な企業理念をもつ会社です。
映画「海賊と呼ばれた男」の封切りに前後して、この闘いの泥沼も最高潮を迎えそうな気配もあり、本当に目を話せない状況です。
現代社会・日本経済の行方・これからの企業のあり方も占うような今回の合併統合劇がどのような展開になるか、見守りたいと思います。
これからしばらく経済面でも、芸能面でも世間を騒がせそうな「出光」、、、その発祥の地を一度みておきませんか？
