I visited this restaurant by intentionally timing my arrival to avoid the standard corporate lunch rush.

The reason? I anticipated that at the start of the fiscal term, key personnel – even those who usually work remotely – would be coming into the office, creating a scenario where colleagues might meet up for lunch after a long time apart!

Work when other people (guests) are off, and enjoy life to the fullest when other people are working.

That is the host’s work-life balance!

なぜって、期初には在宅の人も重要な人は出社して、久しぶりにあう仲間と一緒にお昼でもというパターンが想定されるから！

人（ゲストさん）がお休みの時には働いて、人が働いている時に人生を謳歌する。

それが宿主のライフ・ワーク・バランス！

The day with the lowest count this summer

Good morning to the World and Kanmon!

Well, September is finally here.

So, yesterday was 1st of September.

Speaking of September 1st… it is a day with a distinctive character in Japan.

It is… the day when everyone heads to work or school – specifically, the first day of the second half of the fiscal year for companies, or the day the second term begins for many schools.

That means… it’s the day with the fewest people out having fun, right after April 1st!

That means… the day with the fewest guests at this guesthouse!

There is no way the host would spend such a fantastic day just idly lounging around.

I headed to the spot where I figured there are lowest number of people having fun, but…

Huh? There are quite a lot of people there!

The first photo was taken before 7:00am, but actually, the crowd started thinning out rapidly after that.

Some of you might be thinking, “Huh?”

In short, the people found here before 7:00am were engaging in “extreme commuting” – fitting in an activity before work – and they appeared to be heading off to their work places one after another in time for the start of the workday.

By the time the sun was high, there were only enough people left to count on the fingers of both hands.

So, I ended up having a blast at a popular spot where there were hardly any other people around.

Ah, that was so much fun!

Thank you and you have a nice day trying to strike a balance so that society doesn’t end up in an extreme state where everyone is either just working or just playing.

この夏、一番少ない日

世界中に朝が、そして関門にもあさが来ました。 おはようございます。

さぁ、いよいよ９月です。

というわけで、昨日は９月１日でした。

９月１日といえば、、、日本ではある特徴のある日です。

それは、、、みんな揃って会社や学校に行く日、会社で言えば会計年度の下期の初日です。学校でいえば、二学期が始まる（学校が多い）日です。

ということは、、、遊んでいる人が４月１日に次いで少ない日！

ということは、、、当宿のゲストさんが一番少ない日！

そんな最高な日を、宿主がボーッと過ごすはずがありません。

きっとここでも遊んでいる人が少ないだろうと向かった先には、、、

あれれ？それでも結構人がいるっ！

１枚目の写真は７時前に撮ったものですが、実はここからドンドン人が減っていったです？

えっ？って思われた方もいるかもしれません。

つまり、７時前にこんなところにいる人は「エクストリーム出社」する人たちで、始業の時間に合わせて次々に会社に向かわれたようです。

陽が高くなる頃には、両手で足りるぐらいの人しかいなくなりました。

というわけで、遊んでいる人たちが極端に少ない人気スポットで、思う存分遊んでしまったというわけでした。

あぁ〜、楽しかったっ！

それでは、世の中が働いている人ばかり、遊んでいる人ばかりという極端な状態にならないようにバランスをとって素敵な一日を！

オンとオフの定義 / Definition of On and Off

Definition of On and Off

Good morning to the World and Kanmon!

It’s been about a month since host’s favorite watch, which had been subjected to harsh use by its owner who runs all over the place, from on the sea to the mountains, broke down.

After being repaired at an authorized service center, it has returned to the host in a condition that can withstand harsh usage environments once again.

Putting on the watch after it was returned, he realized something anew:

the definition of “on” and “off” for the host…

(By the way, this week was “Time Day” week, wasn’t it?)

Time when he needs to be mindful of the time is “ON,”

and time when he doesn’t need to worry about the time is “OFF”!

Because even when he is not working, if he is pressed for time, he can’t really call it “off time,”

and even when he is working, the enjoyable time he spends chatting with guests is “off time” for the host.

So, he is really grateful for his current lifestyle, where he has more time to spend without worrying about the watch.

Why not take off your watch, put your phone face down, and just enjoy some time gazing down at the strait from here?

P.S.: I feel uncomfortable with the term “work-life balance” in the first place. Does this mean that work isn’t life? Is the time spent rushing to pick up the kids toward daycare really “off” time?

オンとオフの定義

世界中に朝が、そして関門にもあさが来ました。 おはようございます。

海に、山に、と飛び回る宿主に過酷な使い方をされてきたお気に入りの腕時計が壊れて約ひと月。

正規サービスセンターで修理をしてもらって、再びハードな使用環境に耐えられる姿になって戻ってきました。

戻ってきた時計をはめてみて、あらためて実感しました。

宿主にとってのオンとオフの定義を、、、

（そういえば、今週は「時の日」ウィークでしたね。）

時間を気にしなくてはならない時間がオンで、

時間を気にせずに過ごす時間がオフ！

なぜなら、仕事していなくても、時間に追われている時はオフとは言えないし、

仕事していても、ゲストさんとおしゃべりして過ごす楽しい時間は宿主にとってはオフなので。

そんなわけで、時間を気にせずに過ごす時間が増えている今の生活に感謝感謝。

時計を外して、スマホも伏せて、ここからぼーっと海峡を見下ろす時間を満喫してみませんか？

それでは、たとえ時間を気にしなくてはならない時間ばかりでも素敵な一日を！

追記：そもそもワーク・ライフ・バランスって言葉に違和感を感じます。この言い方をすると、ワークはライフではないってこと？ダッシュで保育園に子供をお迎えに行っている時間は本当にオフ？？
