Biggest headache of this guesthouse

Good morning to the World and Kanmon!

Guesthouse TOUKA is one of the smallest guesthouses in Japan but we have a problem.

It is volume of “Plastic garbage”.

Travelers tend to make more garbage during their trip, after guests stay, specially after group guests, they left big garbage. As the result. it gets hard for us to take out the trashes on garbage collection day. So we have tried one idea since 2 years ago.

It is the idea that we keep our staffs’ plastic garbage clean and neat and see what our guests do with seeing it.

It means we rinse and dry plastic garbage like photo, and pile and compress them by size and put in trash box neatly.

Some guests who noticed the condition have usually asked us the right way to trust their garbage and we ask them just rinse their garbage.

There are a few guests who don’t mind it and trash them all with leftovers. But it is ok, cleaning guests’ garbage is our job. We take care of them and make them neat before taking out. As we think spontaneous notice and action are important, we never force them to do it.

Because I came back from Tama area in Tokyo, famous for strict rule to separate trash, I have no problem to do so. And I know that we can make our garbage compact and no need to worry about the smell. (Our plastic garbage may be the most compact and heaviest in this area. smile)

Coincidentally, I saw one TV program yesterday which is about plastic garbage as ecological problem.

Plastic garbage seems to be not only our problem but also nationwide problem now.

We want to have more strict separating rule considering high efficient recycling. Specially we want our government to set regulation about shape and size of plastic trays for easy piling and compressing. In the TV program, caster mentioned that we should have more capability to recycling. But we believe that our consciousness of creating minimum garbage is much more important.

ゲストハウス一番の悩み

世界中に朝が、そして関門にもあさが来ました。
おはようございます。

当宿「灯火」は日本でも最小クラスのゲストハウスですが、ちょっとした悩みがあります。

それは「プラスチックごみ」の量。

旅する人はどうしてもゴミが増えてしまうようで、グループの滞在後には大量のゴミが残ります。
結果、ゴミ収集日には大仕事になってしまうので、二年前からあるトライアルをしてきました。

それは、まずスタッフの出すゴミをキレイにして、それを見たゲストがどう対応するかをみてみようという試みです。

つまり画像のようにすすいで乾かしたプラゴミを、出来るだけきれいに重ねてカサを減らし、ブラゴミ箱に入れておくという取り組みです。

これに気付くゲストさんは、どう処理すればよいかを尋ねてくれるので、水ですすぐことだけお願いして協力してもらってきました。

なかには無造作に残飯もそのままに捨ててしまう方もいましたが、それはそれ、宿屋の仕事としてキレイに分別してゴミ出します。気付きが大事なので、決して強要はしません。

宿主はもともとゴミ分別の厳しい東京多摩地区に住んでいたので、分別は苦ではないし、キレイに揃えることでカサも減り、ごみ捨てが楽になります。匂いも気にすることがなくなります。（その結果、おそらく地区で一番詰まっていて重いプラごみかも。笑）

こんな取り組みをしていたら、テレビでプラスチックごみが問題になっていると特集していました。

クローズアップ現代＋「プラごみリサイクルどう実現？」NHK

ちいさなゲストハウスの問題だと思っていたら、日本全体の問題でもあるみたいです。

当宿としては、もう少し再生を意識して、分別を細かくしてもらえるとうれしいぐらいです。プラスチック容器の規格化してもらえると重ねやすくて有り難いです。番組では再生処理能力の向上が必要と言っていましたが、もっと重要なのは「ゴミを出す側の意識」なのではないでしょうか。
