Learn from the World!
Good morning to the World and Kanmon!
When local people move to Tokyo, we sometimes surprise that the word we use daily is “dialect”.
We all Japanese misunderstand sometimes.
I learned from guest from Hong Kong.
When he booked, he asked me by mail.
“Do you have Shower Gel?”
It was shown on our HP but I answered.
“We don’t have Shower Gel but we do have Body Soap.”
“No, no, I am asking Shower Gel, and this is it.”
He sent a picture of Biore, which is made by Japanese Company KAO.
As we are KAO lover and send our Biore picture and he understood us.
Biore, Japanese Body Soap, is called Shower Gel in general, I understand it now.
But Body Soap isn’t only one of national dialect of Japan.
For example, we call hair conditioner “Rinse”.
The biggest surprise during my stay in U.S. was “the people who send present on Valentine’s Day”.
Japan is the only country, which trained its people “the day, woman send present to man” and there is the day called “White Day” in Japan for man to send present to woman. Isn’t it strange?
Japanese common sense is nonsense of the World.
Thank you and you have a nice day without cheated by companies, country, mass-media, and our common sense.
P.S. Please take care the sign board, which is telling “Soap Land” in Japan!

海外から『学ぶ』！
世界中に朝が、そして関門にもあさが来ました。 おはようございます。
田舎もんが、東京に行くと「なんだぁ、これって方言だったのかぁ！」と恥ずかしい気付きをすることがありますよね。
実は国全体でそれをやっていることも少なくないようで、、、
今回、香港のゲストから「学びました」。
宿泊に先駆け、メールで問合せが入りました。
「宿にシャワー・ジェルはありますか？」
HPには記載してあるのに変だな、と感じましたが返信しました。
「シャワー・ジェルではないけれど、ボディ・ソープを置いていますよ。」
「いえいえ、ソープでなく、ジェル。これがシャワー・ジェル。」
と返信と共に画像がおくられてくると、、、なんとBiore!
花王びいきのウチもBioreを置いているので、画像を送り返すと安心していました。
そうか、シャワー・ジェルって言うんだ、、、大きな気付きでした。
たしかに海外を旅行すると、ホテルにあるのにはShower Gelと書いてある。
ボディ・ソープという表現も、冷静に考えると想像するのは固いせっけん。
ゲストの情報から日本全土の「方言」に気付く、こっ恥ずかしい瞬間。
日本は島国ゆえに、国をあげて独自の解釈をしていることは少なくありません。
例えばソープに近いところでは「リンス」。
他にも駐在時代には「バレンタイン」に物を送る側の認識の違いに驚きました。
女性から男性にという解釈をしているのは日本独自のようで、
翌月の「男性からのお返しの日」もありません。
「終戦」という解釈もしかり、、、
どうも「日本の常識は世界の非常識」、これからもここで事例を学べそうです。
それでは、国や企業やマスメディア そして「常識」に騙されない素敵な一日を！
P.S. もしかして海外には「ジェル・ランド」っていう怪しい施設があるのかも？
